About the installation

Montréal premiere

OPAL (2023) is an experimental interactive installation that explores the relationship between the micro, the macro, and everything in between. Equipped with custom-designed interactive flashlights, participants are invited into an organic and sensory universe that fosters a meditative, introspective state. Visual and musical atmospheres influence one another, forming an ecosystem that reacts to movement and light.

The name OPAL evokes energy, interconnectivity, and the iridescence of a world on the threshold between water and space - between the known and the unknown. Designed to spark curiosity, encourage exploration, and evoke emotion, this installation originated as an R&D project within the LAB Gentilhomme.

The prototype quickly evolved into a multi-user experience. Thanks to a custom tracking system, each flashlight is tracked in 3D across three axes, allowing for individual control over the visual and sonic environment. A truly immersive instrument, OPAL sets off a sensory chain reaction.
